Filth #1 - Stanton Warriors

It's been a slow and steady climb up the Hall of Fame for the Stanton Warriors (number 20 in 2011 and number 6 last year), but Mark and Dom now assume their rightful place at the top of the pile!

With a trademark sound respected worldwide and festival sets to rip you a fresh one, the Warriors have been the undisputed kings of 2013.

This year has seen us damaging ourselves to the Warriors at Fire and Building 6 in London and also Glastonbury (possibly also at some other places too, but memories don't always stay where they are supposed to!), and every time they deliver the goods in style.

Their set from the Stanton Sessions Boat Party back in August also took the silver medal in our Funk and Filth Mix of the Year Poll (voted for by you fine people), so now they have our ultimate accolade to add to their drinks cabinet - sorry, trophy cabinet - with the Number 1 spot on the filthy side of the Funk and Filth Hall of Fame! Merry Christmas one and all!!

Filth #2 - Pegboard Nerds

Alexander Odden was a name first mentioned to us in a little chat we had with filthmasters extraordinaire, Tony Anthem and Axl Ender, back in 2012. But little did we know at the time, that within a year Odden's tagteam combination with Michael Parsberg would be repsonsible for dishing out some of the finest filthy beats imaginable!

As Pegboard Nerds, Odden and Parsberg have blown the boundaries of the filthy music spectrum, with electro house, breaks, glitch, moombahcore, dubstep, drumstep, even some bits of jungle-influenced insanity all combining into a bass head's wet dream of a musical concoction. The years of production effort and forward-thinking have come to fruition for this Danish-Norwegian combo, making 2013 the year that will be remembered as the year with the Nerds truly arrived . . . and they didn't arrive quietly!!!

Funk #2 - A.Skillz

It's been yet another close battle at the top of the funkier side of life!

A. Skillz has had another speaker-destroying year, packed full of funky times - including countless party nights around the world, the 10 year anniversary of his Tricka Technology album alongside Krafty Kuts, scooping the Best DJ gong at this year's Breakspoll awards, and maintining his reputation as one of the funkiest beings on the planet with another sublime instalment of his Beats Working mixtape series.

This year he has missed out on the top spot in the Funk and Filth Hall of Fame by the breadth of a moth's eyelash, but we take our hats off to Mr Mills for another spanktacularly good year . . . more next year please dude!!

Filth #3 - Dub Pistols

Mr B. Ashworth and his merry band of wrong-uns are THE live bass music act to catch at the moment. But be warned, they don’t hold back!

With a full throttle onslaught of breaks, drum n bass, and pretty much anything else they feel like flinging out on the night, Dub Pistols are likely to leave you feeling violated (in a good way) as you stagger out at the end of the night! They started off the year with the Breakspoll award for Best Live Act, and filled the second half of 2013 with their tour, which encompassed a thumping main stage set at Bestival at the end of the summer. Download some of their stuff here for free, but for the full fat flavour, catch a live set!

Funk #3 - Lady Waks

Lady Waks is without doubt the first lady of breaks! After cleaning up at this year's Breakspoll awards, scooping the prizes for Best Track, Best Producer and Best Radio Show, she promptly marched next door into the main room at Cable, and tore everyone a fresh one with what was arguably the best set of the whole night!

On top of her award-winning radio show, she's also the mastermind behind Russia's now legendary In Beats We Trust nights, delivering skull-rattling bass and breaks to the die-hard European bass heads. She's had yest another quality year, which she can now round off with another appearance near the top of our Funk and Filth Hall of Fame!

Filth #4 - Retropolis

Retropolis literally blasted onto our radar this year, with a signature sound that effortlessly merges old school rave-breaks with upfront bass and jungle elements.

He's been supplying us with a steady stream of elegant piano-ey bits, gilt-edged vocals and face-clawing basslines which have made him one of the stand-out artists and DJs of the last 12 months, with a very promising 2014 ahead of him too. Skip straight to one of our favourite tracks of 2013, Hold Me Now below, or sit and enjoy a whole mix from Sam White, a.k.a. Retropolis.

Funk #4 - DJ Icey

Eddie Pappa is a bonifide legend of the bass music scene. As DJ Icey he's been at the forefront of the Miami Bass and Breaks scene for longer than we can remember, and his tracks were amongst the first to attract us to the beautiful world of breakbeats.

His Automatic Static sets are always a treat for the senses (seriously, some of the best you're ever likely to hear), and you can bet your ass that we're looking forward to the release of his new album Trackotron in 2014!

Filth #5 - Ed Solo

Sharing the number 5 spot is Deekline's frequent partner in crime Ed Solo.

There was almost a full-on riot when Ed's opening night Bestival set was cancelled due to overcrowding, but those first 20 minutes before it got cancelled were absolutely mental, and set a quality standard for the rest of the week.

His Boomtown set this year was another finalist in our Funk and Filth Mix of the Year competition, and we think it's pretty bloody obvious why . . . . dangerously good stuff!!

Funk #5 - Deekline

Living legend Deekline seems to be outdoing himself again and again every time we see him. As an ever-present on the Funk and Filth party time wishlist, we make sure we never miss a Deekline set wherever we go, and anyone who follows him on Soundcloud will have a got a taster of his pukka sets over recent months - not exactly the same as being there in the flesh though, so make sure you're there for the real deal next time!

The man who brought us I Don't Smoke Da Reefa all those years ago is still going from strength to strength, and has firmly cemented his place in the #FandFHOF top 5 again this year!

And if you need an instant hit of Deekline massiveness, he's throwing a FREE LONDON PARTY, TONIGHT, along with High Rankin and Tigerlight! Click here for full deets!!

Filth #6 - Pretty Lights

Pretty Lights is craftsman as well as a showman. His creativity and production credentials are pretty much second to none, and are clearly obvious within the first few bars of any of his tracks. And when he puts on a show he knows how to seriously bring it!

We saw him at Bestival this year, at one of those early hours sets towards the beginning of the week when everyone is still proper buzzing and absolutely having it . . . needless to say, his set went off!! He's also the sort of awesome guy who offers most of his stuff as a free download, or in return for a donation of your choice. If for some reason you haven't heard Pretty Lights yet, then get involved now!

Funk #6 - Nick Thayer

Nick Thayer is one of the funkiest men in Australia, actually in the whole world. This is something that Skrillex noticed when he nabbed him to be among the first artists to appear on his OWSLA roster.

Nick is pretty much royalty on the funky breaks scene, and by the looks of it he's spent several chunks of this year hanging out with A.Skillz, so we can only expect good shit to come from that! His Just Let It Go album from a couple of years ago is still on rotation on the Funk and Filth CD player (yes, we have a CD player, remember those?!) and is well worth buying or downloading. Or you could just indulge yourself with the free downloads we've included here. Have fun!

Filth #7 - Electric Soulside

Electric Soulside keep on providing us with some of the best breaks known to man, in fact Soul On Fire remains one of our favourite tracks of all time!

The Belgian producer/DJs describe their approach as "electro-infused breaks / tech-funk sound, always pushing the limits and riding the charts", which is pretty much bang on if you ask us, and you can be pretty much guaranteed that any new release of theirs is going to nestle itself right at the top of the download charts pretty much straight away.

For ongoing consistency in the briliiance of their delivery we just had to include them again in this year's Hall of Fame.

Funk #7 - Slamboree

If you've been to any festivals this year where Slamboree were on the line-up, and you didn't go and see them, then kick yourself now. Hard. In the most painful place you can physicially reach. Now take yourself to one side and have a word with yourself. Never, I repeat, never miss an opportunity to catch a Slamboree show!!

Acrobatics, crazy costumes, tight rhymes, bonkers dancing, talented musicians and big chunky beats are all dished out in daunting measures, and a Slamboree crowd is always keen to lap it all up. Catch them on their festival trips next year, or at one of the many nights they put on and you're guaranteed to come away smiling. And probably dribbling too.

Filth #8 - Erb N Dub

Erb N Dub has spent his career bumping fists with some of the biggest legends in bass music. We're talking the DJ Freshes, Micky Finns and Freestylers of the world, and he's been spending a lot of time recently locked away in a studio with a certain Krafty Kuts, so we are obviously pretty hyped to see what that particular collaboration is going to emit!

Erb N Dub is definitely one of the most exciting names in Drum and Bass at the moment, and when you throw in the fact that he's also one half of the Hashtag DnB project then his array of beats becomes all the more impressive - get some!

Funk #8 - B-Side & Detta

Another funk-filled tag team! B-Side and Detta are insanely funky in their own right, but when they join forces we get an extra special bass sandwich to chomp on!

The London-based guys are firm proponents of the Ghetto Funk sound and have that uncanny ability to inject a monstrous amount of funk into your life with just a few bars of beats and bass. Their free Ghetto Blasters Volume 1 mixtape is packed full of their own work, alongside some other handpicked nuggets from the funkier side of life - all this combined to create a mix so good that it was shortlisted for (and nearly won!) our Mix of the Year poll! And the fact that it is titled Vol. 1 is making a lot of people very moist! When will Vol. 2 be out I wonder . . . ?
