Funk #1 - A.Skillz

NUMBER ONE IN THE FUNK AND FILTH HALL OF FAME, DECEMBER 2012.

The undisputed king of the funky breaks basslines has got to be Adam A.Skillz Mills!

I've lost count of how many nights I've seen A.Skillz play now, but there are certain things that you can count on!
There will be bass.
There will be beats.
There will be dancing.
And you can bet you'll wake up utterly broken yet completely satisfied and probably (from personal experience) either 60 miles from home after passing out on the train, or with a pocket full of broken electrical components that used to be a mobile phone! Both signs of a quality night out! :P

Devastatingly good when he's behind the decks alone, the set can reach a whole new level of awesome when he's joined by his buddy, some guy called Krafty Kuts, nah never heard of him either!! ;)

When the two join forces they deliver the best sets ever put together in the history of the universe, ever. And that's a fact. Don't believe me? Listen to their latest offering below [Beats Down Under Mix], and check out the other free A.Skillz downloads too to see why there was never any doubt that he was going to be sitting at number 1 in this year's Funk and Filth Hall of Fame! California Soul is still right up there competing for my favourite track of all time, scroll down get it now for free!

Filth #1 - Delta Heavy

NUMBER 1 IN THE FUNK AND FILTH HALL OF FAME, DECEMBER 2012

Si James and Ben Hall met each other while at University at Nottingham . . . and thank funk that they did! Because if they hadn't met and formed Delta Heavy, we would not now be being treated to the most exciting bass music act in a long time! They are one of the main reasons I'm so hyped about the current resurgence in Drum n Bass, they put on a great show and their talents stretch across genre boundaries to see them producing and mixing all sorts of filth!

As part of the current RAM Records roster they see themselves lined up alongside absolute legends like Andy C, Chase & Status, Moving Fusion, Sub Focus and a whole host of brilliant men who make nasty music!

The boys kicked off the year with a dangerously tasty remix of NERO's Must Be The Feeling and spent the rest of 2012 either throwing out similarly ridiculous remixes, or shredding dancefloors on tour around the world, delivering sets like that head in their SW4 mix below!

As Drum n Bass continues to ride the crest of a wave of popularity we can only hope that there'll be plenty more from Delta Heavy and the rest of the RAM boys in 2013!

Funk #2 - Electric Soulside

Taking electro breaks and stepping it up a notch or ten, the Electric Soulside boys have had one hell of a year, the highlight of which has to be the release of their track Soul On Fire - arguably the party anthem of the year, long-standing number 1 on Beatport and surely the favourite for a Breakspoll award in March?!!

The Belgian brothers Patrick and Steve Hoody span numerous genres, but it's their breaks-fuelled electro which is second-to-none at the moment, well apart from here in our Hall of Fame where they clearly are second, but you know what I mean! :P

Electric Soulside are a duo who are definitely on a roll at the moment, and if they can keep the momentum up then 2013 is looking to be a truly monumental year for the guys!

Filth #2 - Datsik

From the same hometown and school of filth as frequent partner in grime Excision, Datsik has been playing at the top of the dubstep game for some time now, despite his youth, and his consistently dangerous levels of disgustingness are the main reason for this!

Datsik is otherwise known as Troy Beetles, from Kelowna, Canada, and also featured high on last year's Funk and Filth Hall of Fame. His recent tracks have seen him venturing towards trap (which we'll forgive him for!), but his hip-hop inspired dubstep roots have made him near untouchable on the scene, and this year he treated us to the awesome Fully Blown amongst other tasty bass-cakes, grab yourself a free download below.

He's a young fella at the top of his game with no doubt lots more filthy, dirty success to come, and as he says himself, regardless of his influences or genre his style is "always going to sound like the future."

Funk #3 - Krafty Kuts

Of course, the Funk and Filth Hall of Fame would not be complete without the legendary, bassline dropping, dancefloor stomping Mr Krafty Kuts!

Last year's #FandFHOF Number 1 is still in the top 3 this year, after another ridiculously funky year, where we've seen him kick the cock off dancefloors around the world! The personal highlight has to be his set on the Arcadia stage at Bestival, where nutters were going truly mental and some guy plummeted from the stage, when I checked he was ok he had no memory of even being on the stage - good times!

Mr Kuts is one of the grandmasters of funk, and a true breaks legend. When he's not travelling the world smashing out sets in all corners of the globe he's also nurturing fresh talent on his Instant Vibes label or in the studio piecing together fresh funk nuggets for us. I'm sure you all know who Krafty Kuts is, so enough of this banging on, chuck on some of his stuff below and get naughty!!

Filth #3 - Excision

Shit just got real. Time for some proper gurn-out action with one of the dons of dubstep.

There are few bass music fans in the world who could deny the credentials of Excision, filth-flinger extraordinaire, and probably the best thing to come out of Canada since Cobie Smulders (yes, her out of The Avengers movie, and the only reason you would ever want to watch How I Met Your Mother!).

Back to the music, Excision is the ultimate dubstep headliner, and a must-see on any festival line-up. There's not much more to say about the man. If you know about him already then you'll know why, and if you don't know, then sit down, strap yourself in, press play below and try not to claw your own face off!

Funk #4 - Deekline

Do you smoke Paul . . . ?

It's been a long time since everyone was denying their addiction to da reefa, but Deekline is still going strong and is as funky and filthy as ever!

Judging by his performances at Boardmasters and Freeze festival in 2012 Deekline is still as cool as ever, dropping tracks that make the whole place go mental and then looking up innocently from the decks with a "it wasn't me" look on his face!

He's spent most of 2012 serving up these sorts of performances, along with some more quality remixes and some of the best free sets that the internet has to offer - for which we thank him very much!

He's also added to his expanding list of legendary tracks with this years remix of Niggas In Paris, taking one of the tunes of the year and reworking it into one of the remixes of the year! Nicely done man.

Filth #4 - KOAN Sound

It's been a pretty epic year for the two Bristol lads, Jim Bastow & Will Weeks, who combine their powers to form the phenomenon that is KOAN Sound.

With production skills well beyond their years, sublime creativity and a DJ attitude that can take the roof off any party, it's no wonder that the duo were soon scooped up and signed to Skrillex's OWSLA label, setting them on the platform to pretty much take over the world!

The boys must have been breastfed on a diet of beastly basslines, and reared by wild bass monsters, because these guys definitely have filth in the blood! I caught them at Bestival this year, at a nice "relaxed" (ha, yeah right!) 2 o'clock afternoon set, which nearly took people's heads off and got the festival well and truly pumped! These guys are the future, pay attention people!

Funk #5 - Benji Boko

Benji Boko is funk personified!!

You have to love him for his funky tracks, ground-breaking remixes, bad-ass hairdo and the most energetic live DJ performances you will ever see anywhere on earth!

Add to this the fact that he offers so much of his stuff to us for free download and it's clear that in Benji you've got someone who is deeply in love with his music, gifted with one of the quickest mixing fingers on the planet and dedicated to spreading the good word in the most uniquely involving way possible!

Check out what Benji had to say when we caught up with him a little while back for this exclusive Funk and Filth interview, have a look at his brand new website and please, whatever you do, make sure you catch him live at some point in the next year, his array of technology alone is a sight to behold!!

Filth #5 - Knife Party

Complete this sentence:

"You blocked me on Facebook, and now you're going to . . . "

Knife Party have released so many unforgettable bangers this year that they've become synonymous with 2012 and have provided the soundtrack to monstrous nights out for funkers and filthers around the world!

This year the ex-Pendulum boys' releases have included: Antidote, Centipede, Bonfire, a massive remix of Last Time, and of course one of the tunes of the year, Internet Friends, which has spawned a string of remixes (some of them actually pretty crap!), three of the best of which you'll find below for free download!

If you've been out at all this year (hopefully you have all stepped outside at least once!) then you can't possibly have escaped Knife Party! Hats off guys, another great year!

Funk #6 - Snatch The Wax

Literally two of the funkiest, filthiest fruitcakes not only in the UK, but in the whole world, the Snatch The Wax DJs are the wax-daddies of the Funk and Filth movement!!

Kristoff and Max come from the South-West party capital of the UK, Newquay, where they host regular nights at the Hub and other venues, and basically demonstrate to the rest of the world how it should be done!!

This year we've seen them take to the stage at both Boardmasters and Freeze Festival, where their alleged "warm-up" sets soon got well and truly out of hand and quickly became the most memorable performances of the weekend for most festival-goers!

Big fat, funky-as-hell breaks, interspersed with basslines filthier than your dodgy old uncle's imagination, Snatch The Wax are the mutts nut! Grab their latest funky filthy mix here for free and find out for yourself!

Plus they clearly have awesome fashion sense too! ;)

Filth #6 - Stanton Warriors

Now it certainly is no secret that Stanton Warriors are well-established favourites here on Funk and Filth! We're never shy about sharing their work and if there's a Stanton Warriors night on anywhere nearby we'll be there in force!

For this particular post on the Warriors we've enlisted the help of the Funk and Filth Rave-Master General, the one and only B-Man, to give us his opinion on the boys . . . and there are few people in the world who can have been to as many Warrior's gigs over the years as Mr B-Man!!

"The Warriors are the dynamic duo of Dominic Butler & Mark Yardley, these 2 have been DJing and producing monsters for years and entertaining ravers all over the world, if you have never got yourself to a Stanton Sessions then you cannot call yourself a fan. Luckily for me over the years I've been to a fair few, mainly at Matter @ the O2 and Cable in London bridge.

These fellas have remixed so many tracks over the years ranging from Basement Jaxx, The Streets, Eurythmics and, how could we possibly forget, The Beach boys - Good Vibrations . . . possibly my all time favourite tune!

The pair also write and produce their own tunes - if you havent bought their latest album, The Warriors, from back in 2011 GO OUT AND BUY NOW! :D

So in 2012 I've managed to see Stanton Warriors play twice, 1st time was at Bestival on the Isle of Wight it was 1am in the morning we had all had 1 or 2 Alcoholic drinks and i was dressed like a Penguin, all I can say is that it went off!! 2nd time was at Freeze festival in London, it had been a little bit on the quiet side throughout the day and then the Warriors came on and once again they lifted the roof off thir tent and the crowd were loving it. Massive set in trademark Warrior's style!"

Funk #7 - JFB

Twice UK DMC Champion and firm Funk and Filth favourite, JFB is the undisputed king of the turntables with his super-human scratching skills.

Yes, that is a tasty Funk and Filth tee he's wearing in the photo (get yours here!), and yes, that is a camera hanging round his neck, live-streaming his handy-work to the screen behind him for the delectation of all those around - and it is certainly impressive!

We've caught JFB performing musical mash-up miracles several times in a year which has certainly been a busy one for him, including teaming up with the legendary Beardyman for Battlejam and launching his own headphone range!

Download some of his mixes here, and whatever you do, go and see him live, it is a sight and sound to behold!!

Filth #7 - Skrillex

Love him or hate him, Skrillex is a global dubstep name! If your gran only knows one dubstep DJ it is bound to be him . . . and you don't achieve global superstardom without being pretty damn good at what you do!

Basslines? Check.
Wobbly beepy noises? Of course.
Inappropriate yet somehow effective samples? Well yes indeed.

These are the mainstays of a Skrillex number, and the dude with the crappest hair in dubstep can certainly rock an arena and throws out a pretty damn good remix too - his Goin' Hard Remix of Goin' In was one of the monsters of the summer!

Another great year for Sonny Moore, but please, pretty please with a hi-hat on top, no more Make It Bun Dem remixes people, there have been enough!! ;)

Funk #8 - REL1

Jesse Brewer, better known as REL1, is Atlanta's bass-music powerhouse, and a force to be reckoned with when it comes to producing and remixing bassline brilliance! He has a signature sound to his beats that is instantly recognisable and dangerously infectious and the REL1 tag has become something of a stamp of quality. When you see his name associated with a track, remix or a night you know for sure that it's going to be something pretty special, so here at Funk and Filth we absolutely had to ask him to remix something for us! Did he deliver the goods? What do you think? Of course he fucking did!! :D

Last month he supplied us with two trademark re-filths of some absolute monsters, which you can read all about here, and for his #FandFHOF entry he's re-filthed two more beasts for us!

Scroll down to listen to REL1 tackle Revenge of the Nerds by Pegboard Nerds, and his re-spin of Noisia's pretty damn special Smack My Bitch Up remix, next to each one you'll find a link for the free MP3 downloads too!

If that wasn't enough, he also put together one of the best mixes of the year, which went straight into our shortlist, and you can grab that below amongst other REL1 free downloads. Big stuff!

Filth #8 - Pegboard Nerds

Pegboard Nerds are pure, balls-to-the-wall, tear-out FILTH! Awesome stuff!

They are made up of the Danish duo Michael Parsberg and Alexander Odden. Dedicated Funk and Filth fans might recognise that second name, as Mr Odden was picked out by the filthy-as-fuck Tony Anthem and Axl Ender as one of their producers to watch this year, in their exclusive Funk and Filth interview! I think it's safe to say that Anthem and Ender knew exactly what they were talking about, as Odden and Parsberg have spent this year as the Nerds throwing out some of the best face-chewing basslines you could ever wish for!

Their recent monsters have included Close Encounter, Self Destruct, and Revenge of the Nerds which REL1 has ruthlessly re-filthed exclusively for Funk and Filth! Stock up on a load of their free tunes below, and put a gumshield in, because this stuff is the bollocks!!

Funk #9 - Neon Steve

Neon Steve Robertson hails from Vancouver in glorious Canada, and his funky-as-hell stylings have seen him gracing the same stage as A Skillz, Rusko, Jack Beats, Zeds Dead, Krafty Kuts, Nero, Featurecast, the Freestylers, Freq Nasty, Boy 8 Bit, Pimpsoul, Mooqee, Nick Thayer and many more, and seen him gain pretty much universal acclaim from anyone who he encounters. Awesome DJ, world-class producer and renowned nice-guy, it is impossible not to like Neon Steve, plus he glows in the dark!!

We loved his This And That Mix so much here at Funk and Filth Towers that we had it on the playlist for months, and therefore had to feature it in the shortlist for our Mix Of The Year 2012, check it out, it's some dangerously funky stuff! Equally adept in the arenas of both funk and filth it should be pretty obvious from his selection of tracks below why he's in our top 10 in this year's #FandFhof!

Filth #9 - Far Too Loud

So Far Too Loud has beaten label buddies Pyramid, Specimen A and James D'Ley to become the highest placed Funkatech artist to feature on the Hall of Fame!

Whilst the other Funkatech guys are also all truly awesome, FTL has well and truly earned his bragging rights this year! 600 Years and Firestorm were two of the undeniable anthems of 2012, and those two tracks alone should see Oli Cash (the man behind FTL) knighted or granted a lifetime supply of jaffa cakes or something else equally as awesome!

Any festival goer or party animal cannot have escaped those two tracks this summer, and the various remixes that they spawned, and you'll all be pleased to know that there are 4 more tasty remixes RELEASED TODAY! Funk #10 - Mord Fustang

The human spoonerism from Tallinn, Estonia is a new entry in this year's Hall of Fame, and when you listen through his array of epic tunes it's easy to see why he's straight into our top 10!

Champloo is a glitchy, wobbly, beautiful mess of beats, and definitely Mord Fustang's production highlight of 2012, but he's also been deploying his computer game influenced, electro house style (or Progressivecomplextroelectrowobblehouse as he sometimes calls it!) in all manner of original and remix projects this year. His anthemic Lick The Rainbow has featured in some of the funkiest sets from some of the biggest names in bass this year, as has Super Meat Freeze and his sound is instantly recognisable and eternally uplifting - dance bitch, DANCE!! Hoping for more greatness from Mord Fustang in the new year.

Filth #10 - High Rankin & Tigerlight

As if High Rankin wasn't enough to fill one place on the Hall of Fame, with his unique brand of (vaguely) dubstep-related schoolboy comedy on the weekly Rankin Radio show, and his jobby-chewingly dirty tracks and remixes, we couldn't include him without mentioning the vocal talents behind the High Rankin live performance (and absolute hottie!) Tigerlight!

When he's not locked away in his radio studio in Germany, talking bollocks with one of his various co-hosts whilst the whole of Team Sexy listens on dutifully wetting (or possibly touching) themselves, Will Rankin is performing live or producing bassline dobbers such as those available below to listen/download for free! Oooh, nice dobber! We featured one of his mixes in our shortlist for Mix of the Year!

And when she's not looking ridiculously gorgeous in various modelling shoots, fighting off 'Jennie' for the affections of Team Sexy, or spitting some lyrics alongside Mr Rankin, Tigerlight is often found producing her own tracks, or teaming up with other bassline heavyweights, such as Dodge & Fuski, Far Too Loud and Document One, or sometimes lending her backing vocals as a session singer to onstage and studio performances with the likes of Beyonce, Westlife, George Michael, Christina Aguilera, Robbie Williams and Rhianna! ;)

Check out some of their combined and individual tracks here, and fingers crossed for a return of Rankin Radio in the New Year. R.I.P. Keith Jobby. x

#Funk 11 - Funkanomics

Funk by name, and definitely funky by nature, Funkanomics have been one of our favourite acts of 2012 without a doubt, and the fact that they haven't quite made it into our top 10 goes to show how awesome the rest of our countdown is going to be!!

We've published a Funkanomics File o' Facts this year, as well as included their Fractal Forest Mix in our Mix of the Year shortlist, and used their frickin awesome American Woman remix to put speakers to the ultimate test in our Funky Filthy SoundDock Roadtest . . . Juwee, FxFarmer and Bobby Kudlicz, the boys from Germany, have certainly produced some of our favourite stuff of 2012!

Don't believe how funky this shit is??? Take a listen for yourself . . .

Filth #11 - Pyramid

Pyramid are Nicky D'Silva & Scott Maclean, two of the finest bassline producers ever to come out of London and part of the legendary Funkafam! Already firmly established as pioneers of breaks and dubstep, 2012 has seen the Pyramid guys take a leading role in the 140bpm jungle arena, but regardless of the particular sub-genre there is always one thing that can be guaranteed with their tracks . . . filthy bass!

2012 saw the boys on remix duty for the likes of Carl Cox and Dot Rotten, and a second year in a row touring down under, let's hope they come back in 2013 with enough energy to blow us away all over again . . . with three nominations and an award at last year's Breakspoll they'll no doubt be hoping for another great awards night in March!

Funk #12 - Lady Waks

It is fair to say that Lady Waks is a very firm favourite here at Funk and Filth, having featured in our File o' Facts earlier this year.

As arguably the best thing to ever come out of Russia, and a consistently funky lady, there is no way that she could not be included in this year's Hall of Fame. If you've spent the last few years living under a rock then I recommend you fill your face with a load of her music right now, and even if you haven't been under a rock do it anyway, highly recommended!!

Along with the likes of Pyramid, Far Too Loud and James D'Ley, Specimen A form the intergalactic eardrum-destroying Funkatech taskforce, and their sound is extra large, extra dirty and instantly recognisable - proper filth!

Grab some of their tracks below and turn the volume up beyond 11 . . . if you've got the minerals!!

Funk #13 - Keith MacKenzie

There is not really much that needs to be said about Keith MacKenzie. The man is a living, breathing breakbeat legend, with a string of anthemic originals and remixes, and an approach to his DJ sets that can best be described as "recklessly brilliant" . . . I still have memories of a Keith MacKenzie set at Matter before it shut down which remains one of the best sets I've ever heard!

Now label boss of Illeven:Eleven records, alongside long term partner in crime DJ Fixx he remains a strong force in the U.S. (and global) bass music scenes, and if there is ever a chance for you to catch him playing a set make sure you don't miss it, you will never forgive yourself if you do!

Brand new Sound Of ILL 2 Mixtape by Keith MacKenzie and DJ Fixx available now in iTunes!

Filth #13 - Ben & Lex

Ben & Lex have spent 2012 damaging our ears . . . and you got to love them for it!! Basslines so sick that Say Yes actually made a friend's girlfriend feel ill, and mixes of the topmost standard set these guys from Exeter aside as true filth flingers!!

World class DJs, these two perform around the globe, taking their places on the same stages as Rennie Pilgrem, Freq Nasty, Tayo, James Lavelle (Unkle) and The Freestylers as well as giants such as the Wu tang, Afrika Bambaata, Grandmaster Flash, Adam F & Fresh and DJ Zinc, and it is plain to see just from one listen why their 15 Years of Beatz & Bobz mix made it into our Mix of The Year shortlist!
